ACI Jet has completed an upgrade on a Cessna Citation XLS, marking its first Garmin G5000 integrated avionics installation at its FAA Part 145 Repair Station.
The extensive project, which also included the installation of Starlink satellite internet and a full interior refurbishment, transforms the midsize jet into a cutting-edge platform comparable to the latest factory-new aircraft.
The retrofit represents one of the industry’s earliest Starlink installations on a Citation XLS, made possible by the recent release of a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC).
With the G5000 upgrade and high-speed global connectivity now onboard, the aircraft has undergone a full-spectrum transformation in both pilot and passenger experience.
High-Tech Overhaul, Nose to Tail
Brian Ford, Avionics Manager at ACI Jet said: “This wasn’t just a panel upgrade,”.
“From the front office to the cabin, this project modernised every touchpoint for pilots and passengers.
“We delivered an aircraft that’s as good—or better—than new.”
The Garmin G5000 installation replaces ageing analogue avionics with a modern glass cockpit, delivering electronic flight bag (EFB) integration, CPDLC capability for domestic datalink communications, and enhanced situational awareness.
The upgrade also improves workflow and safety, ensuring the XLS remains competitive well into the next decade.
The Starlink system, offering the fastest inflight internet currently available in business aviation, ensures reliable high-speed connectivity on a broader range of missions. While the XLS typically operates within terrestrial Air-to-Ground (ATG) zones, the addition of satellite-based coverage significantly extends its communication capabilities.
Interior Refresh Completes the Transformation
Alongside the flight deck and connectivity upgrades, the aircraft also received a comprehensive interior refurbishment. ACI Jet’s in-house team oversaw the reupholstering of seats, installation of new carpets, replacement of mirrors, and refinishing of woodwork.
Structural modifications, removals, shipping and reinstallation were all handled internally, ensuring quality control and consistency throughout the project.
Seamless Collaboration and Execution
The multi-month project involved close coordination between ACI Jet’s avionics, maintenance, interior, and inspection teams. The installation required precise removal of legacy wiring and integration of new systems, followed by thorough testing to verify performance.
A post-completion test flight returned with zero squawks, prompting high praise from the aircraft’s flight crew.
A Model for Modernisation
ACI Jet believes this project sets a new standard for legacy aircraft upgrades, especially as operators face rising operational costs and increasing obsolescence in ageing fleets.
The company is already experiencing heightened interest in bundled upgrade packages—including Garmin G5000 systems and Starlink retrofits—for a range of Citation models and other business jets.
Ford said: “This project sets a new benchmark for Citation XLS modernisations.
“It’s the kind of work that defines who we are—deeply capable, future-focused, and relentlessly committed to excellence.”
